I don't mean to brag....

But.... I... AM.... AWESOME!!! This is about 3 hours of sculpting... maybe more, maybe less. The top pick is my sculpt, obviously, and the bottom is my inspiration. I am over the moon with how well this turned out!!! I went to Hobby Lobby and bought a 5 lb. bag of paper clay... and this used about one and half pounds... I still have to add in the teeth. And then once it dries, cut out the mouth and eyes and sand and touch up... lather, rinse, repeat. I kept the eyes and the mouth as big as possible for visibility and breathablilty. I'm thinking that I can back the openings with black chiffon. It's matte so will absorb light, it's thin enough to see through when held up to your face, but you can't see into it... if that makes sense. I really hope I can have this ready by All-con. Stay tuned for more to come!!! Jason Skellington

What have I done... What have I done...

all is lost... Where was I? Find a deep cave to hide in.... In a million years they'll find me... Only dust... and a plaque... that reads 'Here lies poor old Jack'!!! For those of you not in the know, that's a couple of verses from Nightmare Before Christmas. (The Best Movie EVER!) Anyway, I just wanted to share with you the news that I started sculpting my new mask for Jack. I've never been in love with my vinyl Halloween mask. So here's a little play by play... I started with a male Styrofoam wig head that I cut laterally down the seam lines of the head. (if you look closely at one of those heads, you'll see what I mean. And also, kudos for me for using my fancy Anatomical terms). Then I took the anterior section (aka the front) and covered it saran wrap... just to keep all the little stryo beads from getting EVERYWHERE. I don't have a picture, but it took an effort to get it cut in half. I wish I had a band saw, but I just used a big se

Taking the Duck outta Turducken!

Hey Cool Cats and Cute Kittens, So I actually "finished" this coat about a week ago but I've just been too busy to upload the pics. (And by finished, I mean, the coat is sewn together but the linings haven't been sewn down and the closures aren't done). One thing nice about working in a costume shop is that I can hand stuff off to other people to finish. Which is great because I don't like to handsew. SEW, I can let someone else handsew all those linings. Mwhahahaha! Maniacal Laughter! But I really REALLY like this coat. I want one just like it, in my size -- For steampunking purposes, of course.... or maybe just to wear out on a cool evening. You know, those 3 evenings a year in Texas that are cool enough to comfortably wear a coat. But a little more about the coat. It started off as Burda 2627. I changed the front from a two button center close to a deep tuxedo bib front thing with a shawl collar. I also had to resize this as the pattern

Emilie Autumn

Image
Hello all, While my makeup kit tutorial is uploading to youtube, I thought I would take a minute to share with you some of the photos I took at Emilie Autumn's show last weekend. Now, I had never heard of her before, but back in December I was at the Elysium in Austin for their Nightmare Before Christmas Party and me and ole' Jack took home 2nd in the costume competition. (A really awesome Oogie Boogie took first) Well the prize was a pair of tickets to see Emilie when her tour came to Austin. So I went. And it was a fun show. Kinda of vaudville meets steampunk meets burlesque with a side of crazy. My friend Amanda said Emilie's costume was Victorian Mad Max, or something like that. Which just about sums it up. To me I thought she was more the love child of Annie Lennox and Lady Gaga. All in all it was a good time. so if you want to see pictures, click on the photo below to go to my personal facebook page... Check it out and let me know what you think! Jason

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there! Well, I finished drafting the duck's jacket last Tuesday. Which fit him perfectly. Which is awesome because I'm still not very confident in my drafting abilities. But I'm working on them and that's the important thing. So, NOW, I get to do the fun part--making the actual jacket! As I've mentioned before, the duck is supposed to be a mallard so his coat is green and I'm going to do the cuffs and collar in a really pretty blue. I'll also line the jacket in white, which sounds weird but I want that flash of white when he moves since if you've seen mallards, they have a bit of blue and white on their wings. So this coat will have white on its tails... which, surprisingly, the tails on the coat look a little duckish. Another thing I wanted to mention is that you're probably wondering "What's up with all the progress pictures?" Well, it's not a bad idea to document your process. Whe

Storing/Organizing your Patterns!!! Rising New Moon's First Video EVER!!!!

Image
Hello Everyone!!!! So first off, I've made my very first video. It's nothing spectacular, more like an experiment in video filming, lighting, editing, etc. It's all about pattern storage and controlling pattern piece chaos. Soooo I hope you like it. Here's what you'll need: Your commercial patterns (or your traced copies of your commercial patterns) Spray mount (or a glue stick) Large re-closeable manilla envelopes (1 for each pattern set) Scissors Pretty Patterns and Productions! jason PS. Any constructive criticism would be much appreciated!
