Renaissance: Green Doublet

Image
Renaissance Green Doublet Created: July 2012  Another use of Simplicity pattern 4059.  This time I combined the button down doublet with the tabbed peplum from the laced doublet.  The fabric is a beautiful green jacquard.

Renaissance: Brown and Gold Doublet

Image
Renaissance Various Created March 2012 Items Made: All Brown and Gold Doublet This was a modifcation of Simplicity 4059. All I really did is cut off some of the length of the peplum.  The fabric is a brown and gold upholstery fabric I got at a going out of business sale YEARS ago.  It was pretty basic.  It also has matching sleeves that aren't in this photo because this RenFaire was in Texas... during the summer... therefore... hot. Navy Trousers These are also from Simplicity 4059.  No modifications except that I'm not wearing them drawn up at the knee.  They're made from stretch corduroy with a very fine pile so they almost look like they're velvet.  Surprisingly they're not very hot.  I Brown Trousers (not pictured but can be seen HERE.) Same Simplicity pattern only the length of the legs were taken down to ankle length.  Made from plain dark brown cotton.    Shirt So, the only piece I don't really like...

A Man For All Seasons: Norfolk

Image
A Man For All Seasons Norfolk Created March 2005 Items Made: Doublet, Pantaloons, Cloak. This was made for a college theatre production set in Europe during the reign of Henry VIII. So I got to make a doublet and some pumpkin pants.  It's all made from great upholstery fabrics and the cloak is lined in gold faux silk.  I wish I remembered all the pattern numbers that I used but I think they're out of print.   Actually, this costume is was never finished. The costume crew that semester was very small (3-4 people) so we ran out of time and the show opened before any of the costumes could be finished out with trims and such.   It's still a lovely costume... just kind of plain.

Green Doublet Done!!!!

Image
Here's a few pictures of my latest finished project!!!  Not much to say about this one other than it's a doublet in pretty green brocade.  It's pretty much per the pattern (Simplicity 4059) except that I changed the bottom of View A with the bottom altered to match View B.  Also if it looks kind of slouchy, remember that this is a men's garment and Gemmima (my mannequin) is a woman with narrow women's shoulders. Oh, there are like 2 dozen buttons on this doublet so be prepared to handsew. It may be a little difficult to see without an undershirt but, the sleeves are slashed and they also detach for versatility.

Look!!! I still sew stuff!!!!

I know!  With work and faire season and swords and stuff.... I've been busy!!!  Oh and there were finals in there somewhere too!  (Which, for those who care, I made a 4.0 for the semester!!! And one of those classes was Anatomy & Physiology) I've been working on a doublet for one of the men in my sword fighting group. Check us out:  http://www.thehowlingblades.com/ It's made out of this really pretty green brocade and it's very lightweight which will be nice at faire.  I have the sleeves done for it, they're just not in this picture.  This is a hybrid of both views of Simplicity Patter 4059.  It's pretty much the top half of the long sleeved doublet and the bottom half of the sleeveless one. I've also been planning upcoming costumes for A-Fest and such. I'm still torn between Prince Diamond from Sailor Moon and Chrona from Soul eater. Click below for details on the two. http://www.risingnewmoonstudios.blogspot.com/2012/06/fes...

Are you going to Scarborough Faire???

Image
So yeah, Scarborough Faire is going on right now in Waxahachie, Texas and I finally go to go this past weekend.   And seeing as it's only the 3rd week, that's not so bad of a wait. But I wanted to show off my renaissance garb. The trousers are made from stretch corduroy which has such a small wale (size of the cords) that it actually makes them look almost velvety. I used Simplicity 4059 for the pattern and the only change I think I made was lengthening the leg. The doublet is made from some cool upholstery fabric I picked up super cheap at Hancock's YEARS ago when it closed down.  It's got a cool diamond/geometric pattern which isn't really period, but I don't care.... it looks cool. I used the same Simplicity pattern for the doublet (View A) but cut off the peplum at about 3 inches. I REALLY need to draft some of my own doublets because I've worn this to two faires and saw at least a dozen or so other men wearing this same pattern at each o...
