Monday Minute: Pattern Copying/Transferring

Image
Hey All!!! For today's Monday Minute I've got a brand spanking new video that I made just for you!!!   This is my favorite method for transferring patterns. Why transfer patterns, you ask?  Why not just cut them out like you're supposed to, you wonder? Well, there's nothing wrong with doing it the way you're supposed to.  But if you do, you're limiting your options. If you cut out a pattern on a certain s ize, then the pattern will only be good for making that siz e forever.  Al so, on ce you separate the pieces, it's a lot easier to lose them.   By using this technique, you'll get a lot more use out of your patterns. You'll be able to use ALL of the sizes and it'll be much harder to lose any of those little pieces. In the video, it takes me about 12 minutes to trace one p iece, but I'm stop ping to explain the step s.  In ac t ual ity , I can usually trace all my needed pieces a lot faster ... A piece usually take s a bout 5 mi...

Tutorial: Prince Diamond Brooch

Image
Alright, so now that I’ve successfully finished 2 of these lovelies, I can share the step by step process with you.  I made sure to take lots of pictures and write down everything I did as I made the first brooch, so that when I started making the second, it would look exactly the same.  So here we go. First the supplies... In no particular order... (by the way, this is the stuff I used, feel free to modify it as needed) A. Acrylic crystal teardrop beads (you can use real crystal also, I just couldn’t find them) B. Round glass seed beads in Gold C. Scissors or Wire Cutters. D. 2 3/4” Diamond -- This is a glass paperweight, but there are also acrylic versions used for wedding tablescapes. E. 28 Gauge jewelry wire in gold -- This isn’t real gold wire because that’d kind of be a waste of money as the wire isn’t seen. F. Pliers -- I just used needle nose pliers because I don’t have the kind for making jewelry. First measure out a length of wire just a little sm...

Working With Commercial Patterns: Lesson 1 -- The Envelope

Image
Here's Part 1 of my new tutorial series!!!  This lesson covers all of the information found on the envelope of commercial patterns and explains, in detail, what it all means.  Enjoy!!!!

Two cool tutorials.

just a couple of quick links to some pretty cool tutorials... the first is on drafting patterns. http://jezebel.com/5916905/how-to-turn-your-dress-idea-into-reality-by-making-your-very-own-custom-pattern this website also links to other tutorials such as basic sewing and stuff... Another tutorial that I liked was how to make your own dress form... I've seen a number of tutorials for dress forms... This one seems a little more complicated than duct tape but the idea is similar and it looks like the final results would be more accurate. http://jezebel.com/5803791/how-to-make-a-custom-dress-form-part-one

Basic Cosplay Makeup

Image
So apparently, I uploaded this but never posted this here.... opps. Silly me. Anyway. This is a great basic makeup with several useful applications. Personally, this the makeup I do when I'm walking around the con, competing in the costume contests, or posing for pictures. The products used are all listed in the video and out of my basic makeup kit (which you can find here ).

Sailor Senshi Uniform Tutorial -- Part 2

Unlike Part 1 of this tutorial.  Part two is still in rough draft mode.  I will revise and clarify this section when I have time. Okay. So now were going to get into the harder parts of the costume. Like the hip roll, the cuffs, and the sleeves. Hip roll thing: This will sound crazy, but you’re going to need one of those under the door draft blocker things... Well just the foam. I found a kit at Wal-mart that had 2 of them in a box for like 14 bucks. Anyway, there are 4 pieces of foam for each under door draft blocker (so there were 8 piece in the box) You’re going to take two of those and cut angles on the ends until they form the desired V-shape. I don’t know the exact degree of the angle, just shave away small angles until you get it to look right. Then I glued the ends together with E6000 and smeared the glue out away from the joint to form kind of a overlap over the foam (just for a little extra support surface adhesion). A few long straight pins will hold ...

Sailor Senshi Uniform Tutorial -- Part 1

Let's face it, Sailor Fukus (outfits) are HARD!!! So, I took notes when I made the two fukus pictured above.  Now I don't mean to brag, but I think these came out AMAZING!  So I'm going to share all of my secrets with you!!! Bodysuit Basics: The base pattern you'll need is going to be Kwik-Sew 3836.  I liked that this pattern has a lot of the ideal details that fukus have -- the underbust seamline, and the sewn in skirt with the attached trunks, etc.  I also used pieces from McCalls 6166. I left mine open at the crotch and the dress goes on overhead and fastens at the crotch with hooks and snaps.  That way I didn't have to sneak any zippers in there.   For fabric, I used a medium-heavy stretch satin that I found at Jo-ann Fabrics. And using a 40% off coupon I think I got it for around 6 or 7 bucks a yard. The downside is that while the satin looks pretty, there isn’t that much of a stretch to it so the dress is difficult to get on and off. ...

Storing/Organizing your Patterns!!! Rising New Moon's First Video EVER!!!!

Image
Hello Everyone!!!! So first off, I've made my very first video. It's nothing spectacular, more like an experiment in video filming, lighting, editing, etc. It's all about pattern storage and controlling pattern piece chaos. Soooo I hope you like it. Here's what you'll need: Your commercial patterns (or your traced copies of your commercial patterns) Spray mount (or a glue stick) Large re-closeable manilla envelopes (1 for each pattern set) Scissors Pretty Patterns and Productions! jason PS. Any constructive criticism would be much appreciated!

The Basic Makeup kit.

Image
Hello all! So one of the things I want to do is a series of makeup tutorials specifically for cosplay. I’ve looked on YouTube and, surprisingly, there really aren’t that many... And they’re mostly for a shoujo girl look. So my plan is to show you how to do several kinds of makeups for specific character types... And probably certain characters, too. To start off, you’re going to need a basic makeup kit. And I’m going to break down the list of everything that a basic makeup kit needs. I’ll also give you some optional products as well. P.S. The suggestions here are going to build a kit for a basic, natural looking makeup and will be the basic kit I’ll use for all future makeups. Now, if you’re new to makeup, you’re gonna quickly see there are TONS of DIFFERENT kinds of makeup out there like creams, liquids, powders, etc. There are also TONS of different brands, like MAC, L’Oreal, Urban Decay, Ben Nye, Cover Girl, etc. Whether you use powders or creams or whatever, the res...
