Look!!! I still sew stuff!!!!

I know!  With work and faire season and swords and stuff.... I've been busy!!!  Oh and there were finals in there somewhere too!  (Which, for those who care, I made a 4.0 for the semester!!! And one of those classes was Anatomy & Physiology)

I've been working on a doublet for one of the men in my sword fighting group.

Check us out:  http://www.thehowlingblades.com/

It's made out of this really pretty green brocade and it's very lightweight which will be nice at faire.  I have the sleeves done for it, they're just not in this picture.  This is a hybrid of both views of Simplicity Patter 4059.  It's pretty much the top half of the long sleeved doublet and the bottom half of the sleeveless one.

I've also been planning upcoming costumes for A-Fest and such.

I'm still torn between Prince Diamond from Sailor Moon and Chrona from Soul eater.

Click below for details on the two.

Although I HAVE come up with an idea for the Ragnarok back puppet thing I'd make for Chrona.

And I've been looking into how to make the head move... that'd be tots awesome.

Oh! And I've been working on getting my gallery all updated and posted on this blog.  You can click on the "Gallery" tab just under the header... however be warned that not all of the pages for the costumes have been made yet.  But you can at least see the thumbnails... I've made a bunch of costumes in the past 2+ years I've been back home!!!

Well, I'm off!

Thumbnails and Schematics and lots of Pics in this post!

Updating the Gallery

That's pretty much it... I've spent the past 3 hours updating the gallery here... and it's taking FOREVER!!!! So far I have the main gallery page updated... well... at least with the names of all the costumes I've done. However I don't have a lot of the thumbnails made for the newer costumes (so you'll see placeholders). The other thing I have to do is make new pages for each of the costumes... and that's going to take a while... but eventually, you'll be able to click on each of the thumbnails and instead of being taken to the slideshow, you'll go to that costume's very own page. So yeah... that'll take a while.

Two cool tutorials.

just a couple of quick links to some pretty cool tutorials... the first is on drafting patterns.

this website also links to other tutorials such as basic sewing and stuff...

Another tutorial that I liked was how to make your own dress form... I've seen a number of tutorials for dress forms... This one seems a little more complicated than duct tape but the idea is similar and it looks like the final results would be more accurate.

Sexy Cosplay done well

I was browsing through some cosplay pics on Deviantart and I came across this picture... These are the villains from the season 1 finale of Sailor Moon.  If you haven't seen it... all you need to know is that these five chicks and the five sailors took turns killing each other...

But that's not the point.

The point is why I heart these coplays.  Aside from the creativity and the execution, you'll notice that the girls aren't body painted... rather they're wearing bodysuits.  I love how they used airbrushing on the fabric to enhance their bodies... even giving the illusion of cleavage without showing actual cleavage.... the two on the left look like they've painted in some musculature.

And the actual "costumes" (the super skimpy bikinis) look like their either being worn over or sewn onto the body suits.

This is a really nice way to pull off a costume like this without being nearly naked.

So yeah.  I just like this alot.

A-Fest is in 3 months... I guess I should start planning.

Hello Everyone!

I know.... I haven't been very good about blogging the past several weeks.  But with work and faire and all that, I've been busy...

So this past weekend was A-kon.  And I didn't go because... well... I was kind of strapped on cash because I went to Dallas Comic Con a few weeks before that.

I had hoped to have all sorts of great pics from DCC to show you guys... but instead spent most of my time waiting in line for things.. Soooo... no costume pictures... sorry.

Anyway, I've been browsing though pictures of costume pics from A-kon from my friends who DID make it and then I realized that A-fest isn't far off so I should start plotting my next costume...

Here's a couple of ideas and thoughts... I'd love to see what everyone thinks and I'm open to other suggestions as well...

First up is Prince Diamond from Sailor Moon... I've always loved this costume and I think I could do it justice... I'm thinking the jacket would be in some pretty damask and the purple design done in Swarovski or sea beads.   This would be just a beautiful costume... elegant, regal, sparkly... and I love purple and white.

Jafar from Aladdin.  You know me and Disney villains.  I'm thinking some research into more period Persian fashion.  Give it a somewhat historical basis but embellish with the fantastical elements...  I'm also thinking of adding elements to make him more reptilian -- possibly in fabric choices -- in addition to adding more occult details... he IS a sorcerer after all.

Cobra Commander from G.I. Joe.  Yes, I've been revisiting old 80's cartoons lately.  Also, I have a crap ton of navy fabric and this isn't far from my FMA uni.  This would just be fun.  I wouldn't stray from the design because it's pretty much spot on.

Chrona from Soul Eater.  I love Chrona... and you know me and androgynous characters.  This would probably be the easiest costume for me to make... But instead of doing this one so dressy/tunic-y, I'd make this more of a robe and carry the buttons all the way down to the bottom hem.  I'd also add in some structure and tailoring.... it'd still be form fitted, but not skin hugging as the drawings suggest.  To me it looks kind of preisty, puritan, nun-like... and I'd like to kind of roll with that.

So, yeah, those are my thoughts.

I have a couple of other bigger project costumes working in my head, but I'm not ready to start those just yet.

What do you think?  Comments? Suggestions?
